A four-week creative journey of encountering God through art journalling
Who it’s for
This workshop series is for anyone who longs to connect with God in a creative way — whether you’re an artist, a beginner, or just curious about how you can use art as a form of prayer. Each week is a live replay (eg. not perfectly filmed, but hopefully more heart felt!). You don’t need to be an artist, good at art or even creative! The watercolour prompts are simple and definitely not for perfection. All you need is a willing heart and to carve our about four hours to create with God!
What you’ll need
A few simple art supplies - watercolour paints, an art journal and paintbrush. A pencil or pen to write with. Each week includes a simple teaching, a real time tutorial of the prompt done by Susanna and also includes space to create freely.
What does it cost?
I have felt to make this workshop series pay-what-you-can! I want to freely give of what the Lord has given to me, and my heart is to bless you. If you are unable to pay anything, please still join us!! My heart is not to make money from these workshops but to give the opportunity to help cover costs and support this ministry continuing.
Week 1: The invitation to Art as Prayer
We start where it all began — the heart of the Creator. His invitation to us is to ‘Come to me, all you who are weary…” We talk about how the invitation is not about making perfect art, but about responding to His invitation to come, rest, and be with Him.
From those quiet, hidden moments of friendship with God, creativity comes from the overflow. We will dive into a watercolour exercise that makes space to ask the Lord where he has been working and moving the the ordinary moments of your days recently.
Week 2: The Gardener of My Heart
This session moves from creating outwardly to letting God create inwardly. Through reflection and a Bible study on John 15, we’ll explore how the Father tends to the garden of our hearts — planting, pruning, and bringing beauty from brokenness. This week is a place to be gently challenged on letting Him into the deeper places of your heart.
You’ll create a simple watercolour piece in your journal that becomes a conversation with Him about growth, surrender, and new life.
Week 3: The friend who hears
This week we explore Jesus’ invitation to friendship, not productivity or performance through continuing our Bible study on John 15. We reflect on what it means to choose friendship with Him in the quiet, hidden seasons of life, trusting that fruitfulness will come in season rather than when we think it will. We will talk about unanswered dreams and desires and encouragement about laying them down at Jesus feet.
Our creative prompt looks at the different areas of prayer (gratitude, formation, hope and surrender) and will help you reflect on where the Lord is at work in the unseen parts of your story.
Week 4: Praying the Bible
Our final week looks outward to include some practical teaching on prayer (and hopefully a encouraging challenge!). We explore praying Scripture as a practice of abiding in Jesus, letting His Word shape our hearts and fuel our prayers. We reflect on keeping it simple, keeping it real, and keeping it up—allowing messy, honest prayers to be a doorway into deeper communion with God.
Using the ancient Lectio Divina framework, our creative prompt gives us space to pause, rejoice, ask, and yield, engaging our creativity alongside a guided meditation on Psalm 27:4–6.
A note from the artist 🤍
Prayer has never been about having the right words — it’s about presence, honesty, and letting God meet us right where we are.
For me, that has often looked like grabbing a journal in the middle of everyday chaos and letting creativity become prayer. My life is messy and a little chaotic sometimes (motherhood feels!) but I’ve realised that friendship with God (in a fun way!) gives me fuel for the next day in a way that nothing else can.
Art as Prayer was born out of that place: a desire to carve out space for hearts to slow down, listen, and respond to Him in fresh ways.
Over four weeks we’ll explore what it means to notice God in the ordinary, let Him tend the garden of our hearts, hold onto dreams and unanswered prayers, and pray with the Psalms for the world around us.
My hope is that this course becomes a little well of refreshment for you — a reminder that He sees you, knows you, and is nearer than you think..
