7 Ways to Cultivate a Deeper Connection with God Through Creativity

Creativity is a powerful channel to connect with God. It allows us to express our faith, emotions, and spirituality in unique and meaningful ways.

As an artist, mother and creative mentor, I find that there is often a big disconnect between faith and creativity… but it doesn’t have to be this way. I believe that the Father wants to speak to you through your creative outlet and use it to connect you to His heart.

Whether you're an artist, writer, musician, or simply someone with a creative spark, here are seven ways to foster a deeper connection with God through your creative journey:

1. Prayerful Creativity

Begin your creative process with prayer. I often pray a really simple prayer before I begin my creative time.. something like “Father, would you be in this time. Would I leave this set apart time feeling closer to you, and more connected to your presence”.
Inviting His presence into your work will allow your creativity to become an act of worship.

2. Scriptural Inspiration

The Bible is a wealth of inspiration! It is THE Word of God. It is how we know and understand His character. Drawing inspiration from the Bible will not only deepen your understanding of God’s character, it will help the word become solidified in YOU.

Select verses or stories that resonate with your faith journey and use them as a foundation for your creative projects. I have a few base verses and passages in the Bible that have become my anthem and my life verses, and this has primarily happened because I have used them as inspo for my creativity AND meditated on them while I got my hands dirty!

3. Reflective Journaling

Over the years I have filled MANY journals will all kinds of creative overflow times with the Lord. Keeping a creative journal to document your journey will not only help you to write your thoughts out, it will take the pressure off your other creative avenues - because it’s just for you and the Lord! Through writing, sketching, or even scrapbooking, you can create a visual and written record of your relationship with God and your creative growth.

4. Communal Creation

I love getting messy with people! Invite some friends over, put some worship music on, pray together. Collaborating with fellow believers to create art, music, or poetry will help you see that everyone has something to bring.

5. Art-Based Devotionals

I love creative prompts! And there are lots of art-based devotionals out there that provide guided creative prompts to help you delve into specific spiritual themes. Specifically go check out the Cageless Birds and their Cultivate books if you haven’t already!

6. Worship Through Creativity

Using your talents and creative expression to create pieces that celebrate and glorify God is a beautiful way to combine your faith & creativity. You could create an art piece for your church community or a song to bless a friend in need.. the heart of it is, let your creativity be an offering to God and it will be worship.

7. Creative Retreats:

I love creative retreats and try to commit to one at least once a year! Whether you just book an Airbnb for a weekend for a solo retreat with the Lord or find a group creative retreats or workshop, it will be so worth it. Getting alone with God in nature, finding space to hear Him, to be alone with him.. these are the times that will take you to new places with the Lord in your creativity.

I have found that cultivating a deeper connection with God through creativity is a beautiful and fulfilling journey.. Honestly, it’s changed my life. It’s given me passion to see it happen in others also. If you are craving connecting with God in creativity, I would love to encourage you on the journey!
